We have an ageing workforce, tight budgets, stress in our organisation. We need help with retention, and we need help putting together a wellbeing plan.
These are some of the things we hear every day. Can you resonate?
Do you remember, a few years ago, when we all used to use maps to get from A to B? We’d get our map then locate our start and destination point. We’d plan the route based on where we wanted to go, time, distance, road type. We would consider possible obstacles that might get in our way – big football matches with large traffic volumes slowing us down, were there roadworks on an A-road, or were we likely to get stuck behind tractors on B-roads? Where were the petrol stations enroute? On our journey, we’d have the radio on, alerting us to traffic jams or accidents. Our passenger would have the map open on their lap to follow the route, and prepared with a torch should it get dark.
We don’t do that anymore though do we? Well, most of us don’t. We put the address in the satnav and trust it to take us to the right place – it tells us how to get there, how long it will take, whether we need to re-route, where the petrol stations are, speed cameras, traffic jams… It’s a quick, easy and reliable fix to navigation struggles. So much so that a lot of us simply type the address in and leave the rest to our minicomputers.
Whilst satnavs have given us back some time, energy, and reassurance so that we can get from A to B with more ease, unfortunately, workplace wellbeing isn’t quite that simple. It is not a quick fix. There is no easy solution. And we can’t leave it to minicomputers to tell us everything we need. Why?
Because your organisation is unique. And your people are unique.
Whilst the latest app, fitness challenge, or desk yoga are good in and of themselves, they are not, and will never be, the quick fix you might be after that will holistically support the wellbeing of your employees, engage them, and boost productivity.
When we look at workplace wellbeing, we need to take an approach more akin to how we used to use maps. We need to look at our starting point and where we want to go, what obstacles might get in our way, and how can we mitigate them (we may need a little more than a torch)? Then, with this information, we can put together a wellbeing strategy that will make a difference. When you think about it like that, it’s quite simple, right?
Yet, 70% of organisations we surveyed don’t have a wellbeing strategy. Why? We believe it’s because they don’t have the tools, time, or knowledge to do it.
And that’s where we come in.
